We love Europe, and we celebrate it on Europe Day with a march through Ghent! We believe in the enormous potential of a united Europe, but still see many areas for improvement, such as
A truly democratic system with a directly elected EU president and no abuse of vetoes (ever heard of Hungary’s Orbán?)
A truly unified European market without internal trade barriers, which today amount to the equivalent of a 45–110% trade tariff. That would boost the European economy
A joint European energy policy towards climate neutrality
A European constitution that guarantees the same civil rights in every EU member state
A joint European army instead of 27 fragmented pawns of the great powers
We call this the United States of Europe. Not a simple copy of the US, but a democratic union that puts people and their rights first. One that embraces science to make the best choices and brings together best practices from across Europe.
A fundamentally stronger alliance with the necessary unity and capacity to be the global player we can today only dream of.
This Europe march is largely a call for more European unity and the defence of the rule of law, our democracy, and the welfare state in geopolitically turbulent times. This march is one of several events that Volt branches across Europe are organising to celebrate Europe.
